IBS Kenya Regions
Our five regional chapters across Kenya, each with its own coordinator and activities
IBS Kenya is organized into five regional chapters across the country. Each region has its own coordinator and organizes local events and activities for members in that area. Our regional structure allows us to better address the unique statistical challenges and opportunities present in different parts of Kenya.
Coastal Region
The Coastal Region chapter covers the vibrant coastal areas of Kenya including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Taita Taveta counties. This region is known for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful beaches, and diverse ecosystems. Our members in this region collaborate on research related to marine biology statistics, tourism impact analysis, and public health studies specific to coastal communities. The chapter organizes regular workshops focusing on statistical applications in marine conservation and coastal development planning.
North Eastern Region
The North Eastern Region chapter encompasses Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and parts of Isiolo counties. This arid and semi-arid region presents unique research opportunities in areas such as climate resilience, pastoralist livelihoods, and cross-border population dynamics. Under the leadership of Armara Galwab, the chapter focuses on developing statistical methodologies adapted to the region's specific challenges, including drought prediction models and humanitarian response optimization. Members regularly participate in capacity building initiatives with local government and NGO partners.
Nairobi Region
The Nairobi Region chapter is our largest and most active group, covering Nairobi County and its metropolitan area. As the hub of Kenya's research institutions, universities, and international organizations, this chapter benefits from a diverse membership of statisticians, data scientists, and researchers. Led by Richard Kiplangat Ng'etich, the chapter hosts monthly seminars, networking events, and collaborates closely with the national IBS Kenya leadership. Research interests span urban planning, economic modeling, public health surveillance, and technological innovation in statistical methods.
Rift Valley Region
The Rift Valley Region chapter covers a vast area including Nakuru, Eldoret, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, Kajiado, and other counties in the Great Rift Valley. Under the coordination of Miriam Sitienei, this chapter focuses on agricultural statistics, ecological modeling, and environmental monitoring. The unique geography of the region, with its lakes, highlands, and conservation areas, provides rich opportunities for statistical research in biodiversity, climate change impacts, and sustainable farming practices. The chapter organizes field research expeditions and practical training workshops throughout the year.
Western Region
The Western Region chapter encompasses Kisumu, Kakamega, Busia, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira counties. Coordinated by Edgar Ouko Otumba, this chapter has strong connections with academic institutions in the region and focuses on statistical applications in public health, particularly in malaria research, HIV/AIDS studies, and maternal health. The proximity to Lake Victoria also drives research in fisheries statistics and water quality monitoring. The chapter is known for its community-engaged research approach and strong partnerships with county health departments.
